Electrocardiogram Test in Ghaziabad

Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG)

An Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is a medical test that measures the electrical activity of your heart. It helps detect heart problems quickly. This painless test is often used in clinics, hospitals, or emergency rooms.

How Does an ECG Work?

An ECG records electrical signals from the heart. Small patches called electrodes are placed on the skin. These patches connect to an ECG machine. As your heart beats, the machine creates a graph.

This graph shows the rhythm, strength, and timing of the heartbeat. It highlights any unusual patterns or disruptions.

Why You Might Need an ECG

  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Dizziness or shortness of breath
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Monitoring existing heart conditions
  • Pre-surgery evaluation

An ECG helps diagnose problems like arrhythmia, heart attacks, or electrolyte imbalances.

Types of Electrocardiograms

  • Resting ECG: This is the most common type. You lie still during the test. It lasts a few minutes and is performed in a clinic.
  • Stress ECG (Exercise ECG): This test checks heart activity during physical exertion. It helps detect conditions that only show during stress or exercise.
  • Holter Monitor: A Holter monitor is a portable ECG device. You wear it for 24 to 48 hours. It records heart activity over time to find irregularities not seen in a short test.
  • Event Monitor: This is similar to a Holter, but you wear it longer. You activate it during symptoms like palpitations. It helps identify less frequent heart issues.

What to Expect During an ECG Test

  • You’ll lie down on an exam table.
  • A technician places electrodes on your chest, arms, and legs.
  • These patches connect to wires leading to the ECG machine.
  • The machine records your heart’s electrical signals.
  • The whole process takes 5–10 minutes.

No electricity is sent into your body. You won’t feel any pain.

Understanding ECG Results

An ECG shows various waves and intervals:

  • P wave: Atrial contraction
  • QRS complex: Ventricular contraction
  • T wave: Ventricular relaxation

Doctors analyze these patterns for abnormalities. Even small changes may indicate serious heart problems. Early detection leads to faster treatment and better outcomes.

Risks and Limitations

An ECG is safe and non-invasive. There are no risks involved. However, it may not detect every heart problem, especially those that don’t occur during the test.

That’s why doctors sometimes order repeat tests or long-term monitoring.

Benefits of Regular ECG Checkups

Routine ECGs can save lives. They catch silent heart issues early. People with high blood pressure, diabetes, or a family history of heart disease benefit most.

Regular monitoring ensures your heart stays in check and helps avoid complications.
